01XTS Platform and Trim Overview: 2013–2019

The Cadillac XTS was introduced for the 2013 model year as a successor to the DTS and STS sedans, occupying the top of Cadillac's non-Escalade lineup until its discontinuation after 2019. Trim structure: The XTS was offered in four main trims — Luxury, Premium Luxury, Vsport, and Platinum — sharing the same body shell throughout. The Vsport variant introduced a twin-turbocharged 3.6-liter V6 producing 410 horsepower, and while the powertrain differed significantly from the standard 3.6-liter naturally aspirated engine, the exterior body dimensions remained identical to the other trims. The Platinum trim featured the highest level of standard content and was the most common host for Crystal White Tricoat (paint code GAN), though this color was available across multiple trims. 02Tri-Coat Paint and UV Risk: Why Pearl Finishes Need Protection

The Cadillac XTS Crystal White Tricoat (GAN) finish is a three-stage application: base coat, pearl coat, and clear coat. Each stage is applied and cured separately, and each contributes to the visual character of the color — the base establishes the white field, the pearl coat adds the luminescent depth and directional color shift that distinguishes it from standard white, and the clear coat provides the surface you actually see and touch.

Three-stage tri-coat finishes present a particular UV vulnerability that standard base-clear combinations do not share. In a standard two-stage finish, the clear coat carries the UV stabilizer load — the chemical additives that absorb and neutralize UV photons before they reach the color coat. In a tri-coat, the same clear coat must protect two underlying layers (base plus pearl) rather than one. The clear coat thickness per layer in a tri-coat system is not substantially greater than in a standard system — meaning the UV stabilizer concentration must protect a more complex substrate without proportionally more clear coat material above it.

The consequence: UV-induced clear coat degradation on a tri-coat finish creates visible damage faster and more dramatically than on a standard white. When Crystal White Tricoat begins to oxidize, the pearl coat's luminescent depth is lost before the base coat shows significant fading — the color appears flat rather than bright, the directional color shift disappears, and the paint reads as ordinary white rather than the high-depth pearl finish that distinguishes it from lower-trim Cadillacs. The perceptual cost of oxidation is disproportionately high on this paint code.

Thermal cycling compounds the UV risk. Repeated heat-soak cycles — the vehicle reaches 150°F in the afternoon sun, cools overnight, heats again the next day — generate micro-stress at panel seams where the tri-coat layers expand at slightly different thermal coefficients. Over years, this leads to delamination along the panel edges of the XTS hood, roof, and trunk lid.

Paint correction cost reference for the XTS body:

Stage 1 — Light correction (single-step machine polish, minor oxidation and swirl removal): $400–$1,200. Appropriate for early-stage hazing with no color coat impact.

Stage 2 — Color sanding and re-clear (moderate to significant clear coat oxidation, surface depth loss): $1,800–$3,500 per vehicle.
