Three Body Families, Three Fitment Profiles

The first generation ran from 1962 through 1967 under the Chevy II name. General Motors introduced the car as a unit-body economy platform — a direct response to the Corvair's complexity and the Ford Falcon's sales momentum. The 1962–67 Chevy II measured 188 inches in overall length and was offered in four distinct body configurations: 2-door sedan, 4-door sedan, 2-door hardtop coupe, 2-door convertible, and 2-door wagon. Each body style carries a different roofline geometry. The convertible's folded top creates a lower, softer rear deck profile than the notchback sedan. The 2-door wagon extends the roofline past the C-pillar in a configuration unlike any of the closed-body variants. The second generation replaced the Chevy II name with Nova in 1968. General Motors restyled the body substantially, lengthening overall dimensions to approximately 189–189.4 inches. The 1968–74 Nova introduced a fastback coupe roofline distinct from the notchback sedan that continued alongside it. The fastback's sloping rear glass and truncated trunk lid require a different cover template than the notchback's upright rear window and longer, flatter trunk surface. Buyers of 1968–74 cars selecting a cover by length alone — without specifying body style — will encounter the same pressure-point and wind-flap problems as mismatched first-generation fitments.

The third generation arrived in 1975 on GM's X-body platform. The 1975–79 Nova grew to 196.1 inches overall — 8.1 inches longer than the original 1962–67 Chevy II. The X-body also introduced a different front fascia height and a revised trunk contour. In humid regions — coastal storage, basement garages, regions with frequent overnight dew — the timeline is shorter.

Blushing is repairable through color sanding and re-clear, but the process runs $400–$1,200 depending on panel count and finish depth. If moisture penetration reaches the primer layer or the lacquer has already begun to crack at the surface — a condition common on unrestored 60-year-old paint — the only remedy is a full respray. Professional paint correction on a Chevy II or Nova ranges from $1,800–$3,500 for targeted color sanding and re-clear; a full repaint runs $5,000–$15,000 depending on body condition, color match complexity, and whether the car carries original factory paint worth documenting before refinishing.

Single-stage acrylic enamel on 1968–74 Novas faces a different but equally serious risk: chalking and UV degradation accelerated by trapped heat. A non-breathable cover absorbs solar radiation and transfers it as retained heat against the paint surface. Single-stage enamel oxidizes and chalks when subjected to repeated heat-soak cycles, a process that proceeds several times faster under a heat-trapping cover than under open-air sun exposure alone. The same breathable fabric requirement that protects lacquer finishes from moisture also protects enamel finishes from thermal degradation.

Chrome trim and brightwork on 1962–67 Chevy II cars — window surrounds, drip rails, side spears — are susceptible to pitting from condensation. Trapped moisture at the interface between chrome plating and the base metal creates electrolytic conditions that pit the plating surface over time.
