Chevrolet Equinox Car Cover Guide: The Generation That Went Shorter, Not Longer
A corporate fleet manager in Sacramento sent us a photo three years ago. Six Equinoxes lined up in a company parking lot. Four of them had covers. Two of those four covers were Gen 2 templates applied to Gen 3 Equinoxes — 4.7 inches too long, front fascia fabric bunched at the hood crease. He had pulled them from storage without checking the generation. The bunching was creating a drag point on removal that was marking the paint at the front hood edge.

That sounds like a minor fitment error. The fold at the hood crease was collecting particulates and dragging them across the paint on every removal. Six-inch marks along the leading edge of the hood, visible in raking light, on covers that were otherwise functioning correctly. The covers were the right brand. They were the wrong generation.
We designed around the Gen 2-to-Gen 3 length reversal. It's counterintuitive — the 2018 Equinox is shorter than the 2015 Equinox, not longer. Most buyers selecting a cover from storage or a generic size chart assume the newer model is bigger. The platform data says the opposite.
01The Counterintuitive Size Reduction: Gen 1, Gen 2, Gen 3
The Equinox grew through its first two generations, then shrank. That is not the pattern buyers expect, and it is the source of nearly every wrong-generation cover application we have seen in fleet accounts.
Gen 1 (2005–2009): 186.3 inches overall length. The first Equinox established the nameplate as a compact crossover on the GM Theta platform.
Gen 2 (2010–2017): 187.8 inches overall. The second generation grew 1.5 inches over the first. Buyers who progressed from a Gen 1 to a Gen 2 experienced a marginally larger vehicle — consistent with the normal refresh expectation.
Gen 3 (2018–present, gasoline): 183.1 inches overall. The third generation, built on the GM VSS-S platform, reduced overall length by 4.7 inches compared to Gen 2. The VSS-S platform redesign reduced front and rear overhangs as a weight and fuel efficiency optimization. The cabin volume and cargo space were not meaningfully reduced — GM redistributed the dimensional reduction to the ends of the vehicle.
The result: a Gen 3 Equinox is 4.7 inches shorter than the Gen 2 it replaced. A cover stored from a 2016 Equinox will be 4.7 inches too long for a 2020 Equinox. That excess is not distributed evenly — it concentrates at the front overhang, where the cover hem folds against the front fascia and hood crease. That fold is what the Sacramento fleet manager photographed. We've seen the pattern across every fleet account we've onboarded.
02The 2024+ Equinox EV: A Completely Different Vehicle
The 2024 Equinox EV shares the Equinox nameplate. It does not share the gasoline platform, the body geometry, or the front fascia design.
The Equinox EV runs 187.0 inches on the GM Ultium platform — 3.9 inches longer than the Gen 3 gasoline body. More importantly, the front fascia is sealed. There is no grille opening. The Equinox EV's front face is a closed surface — integrated charging port, no traditional grille aperture, different headlight geometry than any gasoline Equinox generation.
A gasoline-generation cover applied to an Equinox EV will be dimensionally wrong at the front hem. The sealed fascia design means the cover's front hem template — designed around the lower grille opening profile of the gasoline body — will not sit flush against the EV's closed surface. The front hem gap on a wrong-generation cover creates an entry point for airborne particulate, which settles between the cover and the front hood surface.
If you own a 2024 or 2025 Equinox EV, select the EV variant at the vehicle selector. Most competitors don't do it. Their generic size charts have not been updated to account for a new platform that carries the same name as a completely different vehicle.
03Why Daily Driver Parking Is a UV Problem
The Equinox is one of North America's best-selling crossovers. DOE FOTW #1268 data shows the ownership and parking profile that drives the UV exposure calculation: the Equinox is predominantly a daily driver, parked outdoors during work hours — often 8 to 10 hours per day, five days per week.
That is not the same exposure profile as a weekend-use vehicle or a car parked in a residential garage during business hours. An Equinox parked in a surface lot or parking structure during work hours accumulates UV exposure during the highest-index portion of the day, consistently. No exceptions.
Over a five-year ownership cycle, that daily parking exposure represents more cumulative UV load than a vehicle that is garaged during peak hours and only exposed on evenings and weekends. Clear coat UV oxidation follows a cumulative exposure model. UV-damaged clear coat re-polish and re-clear runs $800 to $2,000 per affected area. Full clear coat respray runs $1,800 to $3,500 per panel.

04Who This Cover Is Wrong For
The Vanguard HD is the right specification for most Equinox owners who park outdoors daily. It is not the right specification for every Equinox scenario.

06The Bottom Line
The Equinox is a vehicle most buyers protect reactively — after the first clear coat scuff or the first time a parking lot return reveals fading on the hood. The Sacramento fleet manager was doing it proactively, which is why the wrong-generation cover mattered: he had already made the decision to protect the fleet. The execution error was pulling Gen 2 covers for Gen 3 vehicles.
The fleet manager replaced all six covers with generation-specific templates. At the three-year detailing point, the Gen 3 paint surface condition under the correct HD cover was noticeably different from the previous fleet cycle with wrong-generation covers.
The owner who chooses the correct generation-specific cover for their Equinox is making a different bet — they are betting that the incremental step of confirming the generation before ordering is worth taking, because the alternative is a cover that functions mechanically but creates a new abrasion point at the front hood crease every time it goes on and off. For the Equinox Gen 3, that confirmation is the Gen 3 body at 183.1 inches, not the Gen 2 body at 187.8 inches. For the Equinox EV, it is the Ultium platform at 187.0 inches with a sealed front fascia — a completely different vehicle wearing the same badge.
