Nissan 240SX Car Cover Guide: S13/S14 Generations, Hatchback vs. Coupe vs. Convertible, Paint Protection for the Drift Platform

The counter-intuitive fact about the 240SX: it doesn't need the most expensive cover in the lineup. The Ultimum at $209.99 is built for vehicles that live outside permanently. Most 240SX owners don't need that.

What they need is a cover that won't scratch their paint every time it goes on and off — and most of what gets sold as a "240SX cover" fails that test. We know this because we hear about it after the fact: Super Black with swirl marks across the hood. Satin Silver with a haze pattern that appeared over one winter. The cover was on the car, protecting it from rain. The inner face was scratching it every day.

We designed the Vanguard UHD specifically for enthusiast platforms that use covers actively — not just for long-term storage. The distinction matters. A daily-use cover on a show car goes on and off more times in a month than a storage cover goes on and off in a season. Each cycle is a contact event. Get this wrong and you'll create more damage than the cover prevents.

We stopped recommending non-woven covers for dark and metallic 240SX finishes in 2020. The contact drag marks on Super Black show up in season, not after years. If you're storing a widebody 240SX with aftermarket Rocket Bunny or Pandem flares, don't use the standard template — those flares extend the body width beyond what any production template covers. Measure your actual width at the widest fender point before ordering.

That sounds obvious. We still get the question.


The S13 Body-Style Problem: Three Configurations, Three Different Rear Profiles

The S13 generation 240SX reached US showrooms in 1989 and remained in production through the 1994 model year. Nissan offered it in three body configurations: the fastback hatchback, the notchback coupe, and the convertible.

The S13 fastback hatchback measures 172.0 inches in overall length. Its defining characteristic for cover geometry is the roofline: the rear glass and roof structure slope in a continuous downward arc that terminates directly at the hatch gate. There is no distinct C-pillar junction where the roof meets an upright rear quarter panel. A cover fitted to this body style must follow that continuous sloped surface from the roof peak to the lower tail.

The S13 notchback coupe measures 174.0 inches overall — 2 inches longer than the hatchback. The additional length is not the primary fit distinction. The C-pillar geometry is. Where the hatchback's roofline flows uninterrupted to the tail, the notchback has an upright C-pillar that transitions sharply from the roof to a separate trunk lid. This is a fundamentally different rear geometry from the hatchback. Applying a hatchback template to a notchback leaves the cover pulled tight against the upright C-pillar with material stacking incorrectly at the trunk section; applying a notchback template to a hatchback creates a loose pocket of excess material where the C-pillar would be on the coupe.

The S13 convertible measures 172.0 inches — identical in length to the hatchback — but carries a soft-top mechanism that raises the rear deck profile when the top is stowed. For cover storage purposes, always raise the top before fitting a cover.

Body style within the S13 generation is the primary selection variable at checkout — not just generation.


S13 to S14: Six Inches and One Body Style

The S14 generation arrived for the 1995 model year and remained in US production through 1998. Nissan stretched the 240SX's overall length to 178.3 inches — approximately 6.3 inches longer than the S13 hatchback's 172.0-inch measurement — and offered it exclusively as a coupe. There was no S14 hatchback and no S14 convertible in the US market.

The six-inch length difference is directly consequential for cover fit. An S13 hatchback cover placed on an S14 coupe will be 6 inches short at the rear. The cover's hemline will ride up the lower rear body section and terminate above the lower body panel, leaving the rear bumper area and lower tail section uncovered. In outdoor storage, this gap admits rain, wind-driven debris, and dust at the exact portion of the car most exposed to road-level contamination.

The reverse — an S14 cover on an S13 — produces 6 inches of excess length. Excess material at the rear hem pools against the bumper, folds against the lower body, and creates contact points that move against the paint surface with wind movement. Neither mismatch is a cosmetic fitting issue. Both produce conditions that defeat the purpose of running a cover.


Kouki and Zenki: One Cover for Both

Within the S14 generation, enthusiasts distinguish between the Zenki (1995–1996 production, smoother headlight and bumper styling) and the Kouki (1997–1998, sharper angular front fascia). This distinction matters significantly for parts sourcing, front-end styling decisions, and visual identity. It does not matter for cover selection.

The Kouki facelift modified the front fascia, headlight housings, and bumper geometry. It did not change the car's overall length, roofline geometry, or body width. Both Zenki and Kouki S14 variants measure 178.3 inches in overall length with identical rooflines and rear body profiles. A single S14 cover template fits both.


Why Paint Condition Is the Central Issue on the 240SX

The 240SX occupies an unusual position in the collector and enthusiast market. On one end are preserved stock examples — low-mileage survivors in factory Super Black, Satin Silver, or Twilight Blue that command prices well above original MSRP from collectors seeking original-condition S-chassis examples. On the other end are highly modified drift builds that may carry fresh custom paint applied over substantially altered body panels. Both ownership categories share a single paint-protection concern: contact abrasion from covers.

Super Black is among the most difficult paint surfaces to keep swirl-free. Dark solid finishes act as a high-contrast background where micro-scratches and contact-drag marks that would be invisible on a light metallic surface are clearly visible in any directional light. A stored 240SX in Super Black that has had a non-woven cover applied and removed hundreds of times will show the damage history of every cycle under a flashlight at a 45-degree angle.

Satin Silver, the other dominant collector color, is a metallic finish where contact abrasion disrupts the flake orientation at the scratch site. The affected area appears as a haze that lacks the metallic depth of the surrounding clearcoat. Paint correction to address this ranges from $400 to $1,200 depending on the severity and the area involved. A single clearcoat respray on an affected panel runs $1,800 to $3,500. A full vehicle respray is $8,000 to $18,000.

Modified 240SX examples with custom paint face the same vulnerability. Single-stage urethane finishes common on show builds cure to a more contact-sensitive surface than factory OEM clearcoat, and the first encounter with a rough cover can create marks that require immediate paint correction.


The Enthusiast Storage Situation

The 240SX is the most popular dedicated drift platform in the United States. A meaningful percentage of examples are stored at shows, track day paddocks, or event parking lots where door ding risk and airborne debris contact are higher than average. A cover provides a physical barrier against tool contact, adjacent vehicle doors, and debris in these environments — environments where paint-condition 240SX owners are most likely to encounter damage.

The cover goes on and off in these environments. That is the use pattern. The cover that works for a 30-day static storage scenario is not necessarily the correct cover for a weekly show circuit. A woven inner face that slides without drag abrasion is the specification that matters when the cover is being applied and removed regularly in field conditions.


Widebody Modifications and Cover Fit Limits

A growing percentage of S13 and S14 examples are modified with aftermarket widebody kits. Rocket Bunny, Pandem, and custom fabricated flares extend body width by 2 to 6 inches per side.

DaShield templates are sized to factory body width. A standard-width cover placed on a widebody 240SX will not seat over the extended fenders — it will rest on the flare edges, leave the outer painted flare surface exposed, and create a concentrated contact point that abrades the flare edge with wind movement. Widebody owners must measure actual body width at the widest fender flare point. That measured width, not the factory specification, is the correct input for cover sizing.


When a Different Cover Is the Right Choice

For long-term storage of a low-mileage or show-condition 240SX — 30 or more days at a time, primarily static outdoor storage — the Ultimum multi-layer woven cover at $209.99 with Lifetime warranty provides additional construction depth for sustained outdoor exposure. The price difference is $30 against the protection margin on a collector-grade S13.

For garage-only storage with no outdoor UV exposure and frequent on-off cycling, the Vanguard HD 4-layer woven cover at $149.99 with a 2-year warranty provides adequate paint contact protection at a lower price point. The maintenance requirement is the same across all woven covers: wipe-down only — no machine washing.
