The 6th generation GTP's Eaton M90 supercharger requires a raised centerline at the hood. The flat-hood template contacted that dome under its own weight every single day. The W-Body Platform and Why It Does Not Simplify Cover Selection
GM's W-body platform launched in 1988 and underpinned a family of front-wheel-drive cars across multiple brands — Pontiac Grand Prix, Chevrolet Lumina, Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme, Buick Regal. Platform-sharing in the automotive industry is an engineering and manufacturing strategy; it does not produce identical cars. Each brand used its own exterior body stampings, its own front and rear fascia geometry, its own roofline profile. A Lumina and a Grand Prix from the same model year are the same length only in approximation — the front fascia overhang, hood slope, and rear deck geometry differ, which means a cover patterned to a Lumina's exterior geometry will not sit correctly on a Grand Prix's.
The Grand Prix's own generational history adds a further layer. Three architecturally distinct phases of the car — each with meaningful dimensional differences — and a body-style split within two of those three generations creates a fitment matrix that requires year and body style as minimum inputs, with trim variant as a third variable for 6th generation GTP buyers.
5th Generation Grand Prix (1988–1996): Two Body Styles, One Platform
The 5th generation Grand Prix was produced in two distinct body configurations: a 2-door coupe at approximately 193 inches in overall length and a 4-door sedan at approximately 197 inches. The 4-inch length difference is visible in the numbers, but the more consequential difference for cover fitment is the roofline geometry.
The 5th generation 2-door coupe uses a fastback C-pillar profile — the rear glass rakes aggressively rearward, the roofline drops toward the trunk, and the rear deck is lower and shorter than a conventional sedan. The 4-door sedan uses a more upright C-pillar, with a taller rear glass, more vertical roofline transition, and a conventional trunk lid height. These are not cosmetic differences. They determine how a cover drapes and secures from the B-pillar to the rear edge. A cover templated to the coupe's fastback geometry will pool at the trunk of a sedan or pull taut at the roofline.
5th generation Grand Prix ownership today skews toward enthusiasts and long-term owners. Many park outdoors — a garage occupied by a newer vehicle, or no garage at all. The UV exposure on a 1988–1996 Grand Prix parked in Texas or Florida for the last decade is substantial. The clear coat on these cars is now 28 to 38 years old. Horizontal surface delamination — beginning at the hood centerline and trunk lid — is either already present or imminent on cars with significant outdoor exposure history.
6th Generation Grand Prix (1997–2003): Both Body Styles Continue, GTP Variable Added
The 6th generation Grand Prix continued production of both the 2-door coupe and 4-door sedan body styles. The generation brought a significant restyling while retaining the W-body architecture beneath. It also introduced two trim levels with meaningfully different specifications: the GT (naturally aspirated 3.8L V6) and the GTP (supercharged 3.8L V6 with the Eaton M90 positive displacement supercharger).
The GTP's supercharger creates a fitment variable that the GT does not have. The Eaton M90 unit mounts atop the intake manifold, and accommodating it required a hood profile with a raised dome at the centerline. The height difference is modest in absolute terms, but it is sufficient to create a contact point between a flat-hood cover template and the raised dome of the GTP hood. A flat-hood template, when draped over a GTP, contacts the raised center of the hood under its own weight and the tension of the securing system. That contact point becomes a wear point — the cover's underside abrading the hood paint at the dome's peak across every instance of cover removal and application. Covers templated for the GTP hood accommodate the raised centerline geometry. For 6th generation Grand Prix buyers, trim specification — GT or GTP — is a required input alongside body style and model year.
The 6th generation occupies the middle of the W-body clear coat age window. A 1997 model is now 28 years old; a 2003 model is 22 years old. For sunbelt examples, the horizontal surfaces — hood, roof, and trunk lid — are the areas where UV-initiated clear coat oxidation is most advanced.
7th Generation Grand Prix (2004–2008): 4-Door Only, Longest Configuration
The 7th generation Grand Prix completed the nameplate's production run as a 4-door sedan exclusively — no 2-door coupe variant was offered. The body grew to approximately 199 inches in overall length. The elimination of the coupe body style simplifies one variable for 7th generation buyers — body style is always the 4-door sedan template.
The approximately 6-inch increase over the 5th generation coupe makes the 7th generation the longest configuration in the nameplate's history. A cover dimensioned to a 5th generation coupe at 193 inches will be approximately 6 inches short of covering a 7th generation sedan — that shortfall appears at the rear, leaving the trunk lid exposed or creating a gap at the rear bumper.
The 7th generation's age range — 2004 through 2008 — places these vehicles in the 17 to 22 year window. A 2004 Grand Prix parked outdoors in Arizona or Florida for most of its service life has accumulated a meaningful UV load. Clear coat that has been exposed to sunbelt UV index values of 8–11 for nearly two decades without protection is approaching the boundary of the delamination window even if chalking is not yet visible.
What UV Does to W-Body Clear Coat on Horizontal Surfaces
GM's two-stage base/clear coating — a urethane-based clear coat applied over a basecoat color layer — was the industry standard across the W-body production run from 1988 through 2008. The chemistry of that clear coat includes UV absorber additives that intercept ultraviolet photons before they reach the polymer backbone of the clear coat itself. Those absorbers are a finite resource: each intercepted photon depletes a portion of the absorber's capacity.
Once the absorbers are exhausted, UV radiation begins directly breaking polymer chain bonds in the clear coat — photolysis. The visible progression follows a consistent sequence: gloss loss, then chalking, then crazing, then sheet delamination. Clear coat that has not yet reached the delamination threshold can be preserved by blocking UV at the cover surface. Once delamination begins, correction is mechanical (paint correction $400–$1,200 for minor cases) or panel respray ($3,000–$6,000 for the three horizontal surfaces).
