Four generations of Fortwo production span two distinct overall lengths, two distinct roofline profiles, and an electric drivetrain variant that adds a charge port to the rear quarter panel. The W450 — the European-era body sold from 1998 through 2006 — measures 98.4 inches overall. Every US-market generation that followed (W451, W453, EQ Fortwo) measures 106.1 inches. That 7.7-inch difference does not sound significant until you see what a cover sized for the W451 does to a W450: approximately seven inches of excess fabric bunches at the hood and tail, causing the textile to balloon away from the body panel rather than drape flush against it. The sections of panel where the cover is not in contact receive no UV protection — the cover is blocking sunlight from the fabric, not from the paint.

A non-breathable cover traps that heat beneath the fabric surface. The result is a microclimate between the cover and the painted panel where temperature is higher than ambient, UV radiation is arriving from outside the cover, and moisture condensation is cycling on the paint surface. The combination accelerates UV photodegradation of the clearcoat at the hood panel — the exact location where the Fortwo's body geometry concentrates the thermal load.

Automotive clearcoat contains UV-absorbing compounds that are consumed by repeated UV exposure. That excess becomes the mechanism for wind-driven movement — flapping contact against the hood and quarter panels during any parking period with ambient wind. On a vehicle this short, there is no length of body to absorb and dissipate the cover's movement before it reaches a painted panel.

A universal cover also does not account for the Cabriolet's raised rear-deck profile. It will tent at the rear of every open-top Fortwo regardless of stowed-roof configuration, creating a permanent gap at the rear hem where wind enters and drives front-end flapping.
