That statement has a specific meaning. In 2019, we separated our EuroVan template library into three distinct configurations: the standard van (GLS/MV), the Weekender with pop-top, and the Winnebago Camper with fixed high roof. Before that, we were fielding contacts from Camper owners whose covers arrived taut across the raised roof perimeter rather than draping over it. That tension pattern is not a fitting margin issue — it is a geometry mismatch. The standard van template cannot accommodate a roof that is 10 or more inches taller than what it was built for. Elastic hem adjustment cannot solve a dimensional gap that large.

01Why the T4 EuroVan Doesn't Fit the "Van" Category
Most van covers are designed around one pattern assumption: a tall, rectangular box with a front-engine layout. The Ford Transit, the Mercedes Sprinter, the Ram ProMaster — these share enough geometry that a cover patterned for one will fit the others with minor adjustments.
The T4 EuroVan has none of that geometry. It is a forward-control van on a front-wheel-drive transverse platform — the front axle sits under the front passengers, not under an engine. The nose is short and blunt. The roofline proportions are different. The rear body shape is different.
We're aware this indicts a large portion of the industry.
A cover designed around Transit or Sprinter geometry, stretched to the T4's approximately 185.3-inch length, will fit the length but misread the height-to-length proportions and the short-nose geometry at the front. The front hem sits differently. The rear hem tension distributes differently. And the height — where the real problem lives — is entirely wrong for a Camper variant.
That's the entire game.
02The Three Body Configurations: GLS/MV, Weekender, and Winnebago Camper
The T4 EuroVan was produced from 1993 to 2003 for the North American market. Overall length was approximately 185.3 inches across all variants. The production run was consistent in body length throughout — the 1999 facelift changed the front fascia and tail lights but not the roof height or overall body dimensions. Model year selection does not change the cover template. Body configuration does.
Standard van (GLS and MV trims): approximately 72.8 inches tall. The base body configuration. An uninterrupted roofline runs from the A-pillar to the rear. A cover built to this configuration seats across the flat roof without tension concentration at any single point. The standard van is the most common T4 configuration in daily use in the US market.
Westfalia Weekender (pop-top): 72.8 inches in the closed position. In overall height with the top down and latched, the Weekender is dimensionally close to the standard van. The difference is the pop-top mechanism's edge profile. The raised section's perimeter frame sits slightly proud of the surrounding roof surface even in the latched position. A standard van cover placed on a Weekender contacts this edge detail differently than a flat roofline — the cover fabric rides across the pop-top perimeter rather than lying flat. The Weekender template accounts for this edge geometry in the closed position.
If you own a Westfalia Weekender, don't order a cover for the standard-roof GLS. It will sit across the pop-top mechanism, not over it.
One more rule for Weekender owners: the cover installs only with the pop-top fully lowered and latched. A cover placed over a raised pop-top does not protect the vehicle — it concentrates load on the canvas hinge seams and can prevent the mechanism from latching after removal. Lower the top, verify the latch, then install the cover.
Winnebago Camper (fixed high roof): approximately 82 to 84 inches tall. The Camper variant was a factory-authorized conversion by Winnebago with a permanent fixed raised roof section, windows, and full standing headroom inside. The raised roof adds approximately 10 to 12 inches of permanent height over the standard van. There is no lowered position. The roof perimeter transitions from the standard body height at the raised step that runs across the roof near the B-pillar line.
We stopped selling a single EuroVan cover size in 2019. The height difference between a standard GLS and a Winnebago Camper is over 10 inches. That is not a fitting margin.
A standard van cover cannot accommodate a Camper. It pulls taut across the raised roof step, concentrating the entire cover load along that single perimeter line — the highest-stress contact zone on the entire cover surface. Over installation cycles, abrasion accumulates at that line on both the cover fabric and the painted surface of the Camper's roof transition panel. The Camper template is built to the raised roof perimeter specifically so the cover drapes without tension concentration at the step.
03Composite Plastic Bumpers: Why They Fail Before the Paint Does
The T4 EuroVan uses composite plastic for both front and rear bumper fascias — standard practice for 1990s van production. The consequence for protection strategy is that the EuroVan presents two materially different surface types that respond to UV exposure on different timelines.
Composite plastic undergoes UV photodegradation differently than painted steel. UV-A radiation breaks down the polymer matrix at the surface. The result: surface gloss loss, progressive chalking and rough texture, and eventually cracking at stress points — bumper corners, mounting clip locations, impact edges. This happens within two to three outdoor seasons of unprotected UV exposure in a high-UV market. That sounds obvious. In practice, buyers search 'VW EuroVan cover' and order what comes up first. What comes up first is usually sized for a standard-height van.
The composite bumpers typically reach visible failure before the painted steel panels do. A cover that protects the body panels but leaves the bumper fascias exposed is providing partial protection on a vehicle where the most UV-sensitive material is at the front and rear.
EuroVan composite bumper replacement runs $800 to $2,000 depending on whether a new-old-stock part exists or a used replacement must be sourced and refinished. Paint damage on the van body panels runs $1,200 to $3,500 for correction and respray. For a well-maintained EuroVan — collector market values run $8,000 to $35,000 for clean examples on Bring a Trailer and Hagerty auctions — the case for protecting both substrate types simultaneously is straightforward.

An EuroVan that has been stored outdoors without UV protection for ten years in a Southwest climate does not look like one that has been covered. The paint condition difference is visible to any buyer.
Most can't reverse that difference with correction alone. Once the clear coat is gone, correction becomes respray.
