Why this vehicle needs the right cover
The Chevrolet Fleetmaster was produced for only three years — 1946, 1947, and 1948 — yet in that short window Chevrolet offered five distinct body styles: a 2-door sport coupe with a fastback-influenced roofline, a 4-door sport sedan with an upright C-pillar, a convertible that required a separate template for top-up, top-down, and top-stored positions, a 2-door Town Sedan, and the Fleetmaster Station Wagon — the "woody" wagon, with real ash framing and maple or birch body panels.
These are not minor trim variations. The coupe's lower roofline, the sedan's upright rear profile, and the woody wagon's tall squared roofline are three geometrically distinct cover templates.
Applying a generic "1940s Chevrolet" cover to any Fleetmaster body style produces either bridging at the roof or excess fabric pooling at the body sides — neither of which protects the car.
The woody wagon compounds the challenge: its body combines nitrocellulose lacquer on the painted metal sections and varnished or unfinished wood on the structural panels, and both require breathable coverage.
Woody wagon restorations reach $60,000–$200,000 at top auction; original lacquer resprays run $15,000–$40,000. The DaShield Ultimum, at $209.99, is designed in Buena Park, California and specified by body style at checkout — routing each Fleetmaster variant to the correct template rather than a generic postwar bracket.
Chevrolet Fleetmaster cover priorities
Engineered for the Chevrolet Fleetmaster
Three reasons the DaShield Ultimum is the correct cover for the Chevrolet Fleetmaster.
Body-style-specific template for a five-variant production run. The 1946–1948 Fleetmaster was built in five body styles, and the roofline geometry differs meaningfully across them. The sport coupe's fastback-influenced roofline drops from the B-pillar at a pronounced angle — a distinct C-pillar geometry from the sport sedan's upright rear profile. The woody wagon's tall, squared roofline is a third distinct shape, with more vertical height through the body sides than either the coupe or sedan. The convertible adds a fourth and fifth configuration depending on top position. Selecting body style at DaShield checkout routes to the correct template rather than applying a single "1940s Chevrolet full-size" pattern that fits none of these shapes correctly. A cover that tents at the roofline or pulls taut across the C-pillar introduces fabric contact pressure at exactly the points where 75-year-old nitrocellulose lacquer is most vulnerable.
Non-abrasive woven face for 1946–1948 nitrocellulose lacquer. The Fleetmaster is among the oldest-paint vehicles in the DaShield catalog. Nitrocellulose lacquer from this era is the softest paint system produced in the US — softer by a significant margin than modern basecoat/clearcoat, and softer than the synthetic enamel that replaced it in the 1950s. A non-woven polypropylene inner face dragged across 75-year-old lacquer under cover removal or wind movement leaves linear contact marks that are visible under any raking light, and that require paint correction — lacquer correction runs $600–$2,000. The Ultimum's woven face slides consistently rather than dragging, producing glide rather than catch at the paint surface.
Breathable construction for the woody wagon's wood body panels. The Fleetmaster Station Wagon's ash structural framing and maple or birch panel boards are hygroscopic — they absorb atmospheric moisture and release it as ambient conditions change. A non-breathable cover prevents moisture from escaping through the fabric, trapping it against the wood grain edges and the varnished panel faces. At the joint lines where varnish has worn away, trapped moisture accelerates the checking — fine surface cracking — that destroys original wood panels. Original woody wagon wood in verified good condition can be preserved for decades with breathable storage; the same wood under a non-breathable cover can check and split within a few storage seasons. Woody wagon restorations cost $60,000–$200,000; the moisture management question is not a minor detail. Designed in Buena Park, California.
