Why this vehicle needs the right cover
The Chevrolet Special Deluxe exists in two distinct physical forms separated by a factory shutdown. The 1941 model and the 1946–1948 postwar production cars share the same body tooling — civilian production ended in early 1942 when GM retooled for wartime manufacturing, and when the line restarted in 1946, the automaker resumed with the original 1942 dies. The proportions, roofline geometry, and fender profile of a 1947 Special Deluxe sedan are identical to what the 1941 model established. The 1949 model year changed everything: the "Futuramic" redesign introduced integrated fenders, a lower beltline, and a completely different roofline slope. These two bodies are not interchangeable at the cover level — they require separate templates.
Both bodies share a vulnerability that drives the entire storage decision: nitrocellulose lacquer. Every Special Deluxe left the factory with this finish, and it remains dramatically softer than any urethane clearcoat produced after the 1970s. A non-woven polypropylene inner face dragged across lacquer during cover removal leaves linear contact marks visible under any raking light source — marks that require $600–$2,000 in professional paint correction to remove. Full restoration repaints on prewar and early postwar classics run $15,000–$50,000. Period chrome — the Special Deluxe carried full bumpers, a prominent grille, hood ornament, and belt moldings — is susceptible to moisture trapping under any cover material that restricts airflow, accelerating oxidation at the plating surface. Chrome re-plating a full bumper set runs $2,000–$6,000.
DaShield Ultimum at $209.99 is designed for this storage scenario. Designed in Buena Park, California.
Chevrolet Special Deluxe cover priorities
Engineered for the Chevrolet Special Deluxe
Three factors make the DaShield Ultimum the correct specification for the Special Deluxe.
Body-specific template selection routed by year. The prewar/postwar 1941–1948 body is geometrically distinct from the 1949–1952 Futuramic body in ways that matter at the cover level. The 1941–1948 cars carry the fastback coupe profile with pontoon fenders and separate headlight housings — a body silhouette with specific height and overhang dimensions at the rear quarter. The 1949 redesign dropped the beltline, changed the roofline slope from a pronounced sweep to a boxier form, and integrated the fenders into the body shell. Selecting by model year at checkout routes the correct template to the correct body. Ordering a 1949+ template for a 1947 sedan — or a 1941–1948 template for a 1950 sedan — produces visible fitment error at the rear and quarter panels where the body geometry diverges most sharply.
Non-abrasive woven face for lacquer preservation. Ultimum's inner face is constructed from woven fabric. The woven structure presents oriented fibers that slide in a consistent direction during installation and removal — the fibers move with the fabric rather than projecting randomly from its surface. Non-woven polypropylene, used in lower-cost covers, has randomly oriented fiber ends. On a modern urethane clearcoat this distinction is manageable. On nitrocellulose lacquer — which scores measurably softer on the Mohs scale than urethane and deforms under sustained localized pressure — those randomly oriented fiber ends act as abrasion points. A single careless pull during cover removal can produce drag marks across a quarter panel. Paint correction on lacquer is not the same category of work as correction on modern finishes: the $600–$2,000 range for professional correction assumes an experienced technician working with lacquer-safe compounds, not standard dual-action polishing protocols.
Breathable construction for wood-body and chrome storage. The Special Deluxe Canopy Express and station wagon variants used ash structural framing with decorative maple and birch planking. Wood moves with moisture — it expands when relative humidity rises and contracts when it drops. A non-breathable cover traps condensation from temperature cycling against the wood grain edges and at the joints between the ash framing and decorative planking, accelerating checking and splitting. Ultimum's breathable construction allows moisture vapor to move outward rather than accumulate under the cover. The same breathability that protects wood paneling also protects chrome: moisture that cannot escape under a non-breathable cover pools at the low points of a car's profile and holds against chrome plating for extended periods, accelerating oxidation at the nickel and copper sublayers beneath the chrome surface. Chrome re-plating a full bumper set runs $2,000–$6,000. Full restoration repaint: $15,000–$50,000.
