Why this vehicle needs the right cover
The Mercedes-Benz 450 SL presents a storage problem that most car covers are not designed to address: one vehicle, two distinct roofline configurations. The R107 roadster was sold standard with a removable hardtop and a canvas soft top, and the cover selection depends entirely on which configuration the car sits in during storage — not which top it was driven with that day.
The hardtop-on configuration adds approximately two to three inches of structural height at the B and C-pillar area relative to the soft-top-up configuration. A cover sized for the soft top will pull taut across the hardtop and fail to seat properly at the lower quarters, generating contact tension at the very points where the hardtop's perimeter chrome trim runs. That chrome trim — along with the 450 SL's chrome bumpers, external door mirrors, and rocker moldings — is the most abrasion-sensitive surface on the vehicle. Generic non-woven polypropylene covers drag fiber ends across chrome during installation and removal, and chrome shows contact drag marks more visibly than paint.
The cost of getting this wrong is not theoretical. Chrome re-plating runs $800 to $3,000 per bumper section for period-correct work. A concours-quality classic repaint ranges $12,000 to $40,000, and paint correction on early lacquer-painted R107 units runs $400 to $1,200 per session.
DaShield Ultimum, at $209.99 for a car fitment, is specified for hardtop or soft-top configuration separately. Designed in Buena Park, California, it uses a woven inner face to protect the 450 SL's chrome and paint through seasonal storage without the fiber-drag risk of non-woven alternatives.
Mercedes-Benz 450 SL cover priorities
Engineered for the Mercedes-Benz 450 SL
Three reasons DaShield Ultimum is the correct cover for the Mercedes-Benz 450 SL R107:
Configuration-aware template for hardtop and soft-top storage. The R107 hardtop adds approximately two to three inches of height at the B and C-pillar area and changes the rear roofline profile entirely. The hardtop's transition from the C-pillar to the rear deck is a structural edge; the soft top, when raised, produces a rounded organic profile at the same location. These are not minor dimensional differences — they require different rear-hem geometry and different mid-section tension to seat the cover correctly at the lower quarters without pulling or pooling. A cover selected for soft-top configuration placed over the installed hardtop will sit proud of the lower quarters and apply contact pressure directly to the hardtop's perimeter chrome trim. A cover selected for hardtop configuration placed over the soft top will be dimensionally loose at the roofline and allow the fabric to contact the soft-top window under wind load. DaShield maps each configuration separately so the cover seats as intended.
Woven inner face for chrome and lacquer surfaces. The 450 SL carries chrome on the hardtop perimeter trim, the front and rear bumpers, the external door mirror housings, and the rocker moldings. All of these surfaces are metal-plated and show contact drag marks under any perpendicular fiber abrasion. Non-woven polypropylene covers present protruding fiber ends at the inner face; under the weight and motion of cover installation and removal, those fiber ends drag across chrome and lacquer rather than sliding parallel to the surface. Ultimum's woven inner face presents an oriented, flat fiber pattern that moves consistently with the surface during installation and removal.
Breathable laminate for seasonal collector storage. The 450 SL is typically stored three to six months per year. During that period, temperature cycling creates condensation under any non-breathable cover, and that condensation accumulates at exactly the locations most vulnerable on the R107: the chrome trim edges, the soft-top well area, and the bare metal channels where the hardtop seals to the body. Trapped moisture accelerates galvanic pitting in chrome and surface oxidation in the soft-top well. Ultimum's woven laminate construction allows moisture vapor to escape outward continuously, keeping stored surfaces dry through seasonal temperature changes. Chrome re-plating runs $800 to $3,000 per section; a classic repaint runs $12,000 to $40,000. Lifetime warranty included.
