Three specifications separate a winter-rated SUV cover from a general-purpose outdoor cover in a snow state.

First: directional vapor transport. Breathable woven laminate allows moisture trapped between cover and paint to exit outward. Non-breathable covers — including many sold as "winter covers" — block liquid water from entering but also trap water vapor from the vehicle's thermal cycling.
