Why this SUV needs the right cover
The Honda Element's nearly vertical rear pillars and squared-off body geometry create a fitment problem that most compact SUV covers are not built for. A standard cover template designed for conventionally shaped, rounded-corner SUVs will tent at the Element's squared rear corners rather than draping flat against the panel — the fabric bridges across the corner geometry instead of following it, leaving the corner areas unsupported and creating a flapping zone that contacts the paint in wind. Getting a cover to sit correctly on the Element requires a template that accounts for this boxy geometry from the rear pillar down.
The Element also presents a dual UV vulnerability that distinguishes it from most SUVs. The painted upper body panels — hood, roof, doors, rear gate — lose clearcoat to UV-driven photo-oxidation the same way any painted vehicle does. But the Element's unpainted black textured plastic lower cladding faces a separate UV problem: the surface molecules in the cladding oxidize under UV exposure, causing the cladding to fade from deep black to a chalky grey. This process cannot be reversed by cleaning. Clear coat respray runs $1,800–$3,500. Plastic cladding replacement for the front apron, side skirts, and rear apron runs $800–$2,000 for a full set. Paint correction for existing clearcoat damage runs $400–$1,200. The Element's flat roof panel compounds the UV load — a nearly horizontal painted surface receives the maximum direct solar exposure of any panel on the vehicle.
DaShield HD at $149.99 blocks UV from reaching both the painted upper surfaces and the plastic cladding simultaneously. Designed in Buena Park, California. 2-Year warranty.
Honda Element cover priorities
Engineered for the Honda Element
Three reasons DaShield HD fits the Honda Element correctly where generic covers do not.
1. Boxy-body-geometry template built for the Element's squared corners. Most compact SUV cover templates are patterned to conventional rounded rear quarter geometry — the body curves gradually from the rear pillar into the bumper, and the cover follows that curve. The Honda Element does not have this geometry. Its rear pillars are nearly vertical, and the corners are sharply squared rather than rounded. A conventional compact SUV cover applied to the Element will tent at these corners, with the fabric bridging across the squared geometry rather than lying flat against it. The portion of the corner that is not in contact with the cover is exposed — and in wind, the bridged section flaps against the corner paint repeatedly. The HD template's corner sections are cut to the Element's specific squared geometry, so the cover seats flat against the vertical rear pillars rather than spanning across them.
2. UV blocking for both painted surfaces and the black plastic cladding. The Element's lower body uses unpainted black textured plastic cladding — the front apron below the bumper, the lower door sills, and the rear apron are all exposed textured plastic rather than painted sheetmetal. Unpainted plastic cladding that receives prolonged UV exposure undergoes surface oxidation that fades the material from black to a chalky grey. Unlike clearcoat oxidation on painted surfaces, which can sometimes be addressed with paint correction, plastic cladding oxidation cannot be reversed by cleaning, polishing, or detailing. Plastic restorer products can temporarily darken the surface but typically last one to six months before the grey returns. Permanent color restoration requires full cladding replacement ($800–$2,000 for a complete set of front apron, side skirts, and rear apron) or professional plastic dyeing. A cover that blocks UV from reaching both the painted upper body and the plastic lower cladding prevents both damage paths. The HD's UV-blocking outer layer accomplishes this with a single product.
3. Heat-soak reduction for the Element's flat roof panel. The Element's roofline is nearly horizontal — the roof panel receives the maximum direct solar load of any surface on the vehicle on a clear day. Interior temperatures in a parked Element in direct sun routinely reach 150°F or higher. Dashboard panels, door card materials, and cargo area surfaces all experience accelerated thermal degradation under sustained heat-soak exposure. A covered Element stays 20–35°F cooler inside, reducing the cumulative heat stress on interior materials over the ownership horizon. For Element owners who use the rear cargo area for gear, tools, or work equipment, cabin temperature matters beyond comfort.
Cost anchors for uncovered ownership: clear coat respray $1,800–$3,500; plastic cladding replacement (full set) $800–$2,000; paint correction $400–$1,200. DaShield HD: $149.99.
