The Jeep Cherokee nameplate covers two completely different vehicles: the XJ (1984–2001) at 165.3 inches long and 66.4 inches wide, and the KL (2014–present) at 182.5 inches long and 73.9 inches wide. A cover sized for one will not fit the other — the KL is 17.2 inches longer and 7.5 inches wider than the 4-door XJ. For XJ owners with aftermarket fender flares — Bushwacker, ARB, and similar trail-spec brands — a stock-dimension XJ cover will pull taut across the flare surface and concentrate fabric wear at the flare edge on every installation cycle.

DaShield produces separate fit specifications for XJ and KL generations, with adjusted patterns for flare-equipped XJs. The youngest XJ is 23 years old; many have original factory paint from the 1980s and 1990s that cannot be easily re-matched for respray. The Ultimum's multi-layer woven construction and lifetime warranty address the UV and contact risk specific to these vehicles. For daily outdoor KL parking across Sport, Latitude, and Trailhawk trims, the Vanguard UHD provides 5-layer woven protection with a soft inner face and AATCC 16 UV resistance.

Most cover guides for the Jeep Cherokee treat the XJ and KL as variations of the same vehicle. They are not. The XJ is a 165.3-inch unibody compact with 1980s-era paint chemistry that has been accumulating UV exposure for 23 to 40 years. The KL is a 182.5-inch modern crossover with a current-production clearcoat system and active factory color match availability. These are different vehicles with different protection requirements.

For XJ owners, the fender flare fitment question is not a footnote — it is the first fitment question. A stock-body XJ at 66.4 inches wide requires a different pattern than a flare-equipped XJ at 73 inches or wider. Bushwacker Flat Style flares add approximately 3.5 inches per side, bringing the effective cover width requirement to 73 inches or more. ARB and similar trail-spec flares vary but fall in the 2.5-to-4-inch-per-side range. A standard XJ cover applied to a flared body creates fabric tension at the flare edge that concentrates wear at the contact line over repeated on/off cycles. The cover that protects the body panels fails at the widest point of the vehicle — the location most exposed to environmental contact.

DaShield addresses the XJ/KL split with generation-specific fit patterns, and provides adjusted specifications for flare-equipped XJ builds. For flare-equipped orders, specify the flare brand and model at purchase so the pattern reflects the actual body width. The Ultimum — multi-layer woven construction, lifetime warranty — is the preservation choice for XJs with original factory paint that cannot be easily color-matched. The Vanguard UHD — 5-layer woven, soft inner face, AATCC 16 UV resistance standard, 5-year warranty — serves daily-driver outdoor use for both stock XJ and KL owners. Woven lines require wipe-down maintenance only. SoftTec Satin for indoor-only storage across either generation.
