The Jeep CJ7 (1976–1986) is a 148-inch open-body 4x4 that left the factory with three distinct roof configurations — factory soft top, factory fiberglass hard top, and no top at all. Each configuration produces a different vehicle height and a different roofline contour. The soft top, fully erected and latched, brings the CJ7 to approximately 69 inches. The hard top adds another 1 to 2 inches and introduces a C-pillar profile the soft-top canvas does not replicate. The topless configuration drops the relevant height reference to the roll cage — roughly 51 to 55 inches — with an open cockpit below. A single cover template cannot accommodate all three states: excess fabric from an oversized template presses into the cockpit on a topless CJ7, while an undersized template leaves the hard top's C-pillar area poorly covered and subject to wind-driven abrasion.

1. Separate templates for all three top states. DaShield maps the CJ7 in soft-top, hard-top, and open-frame (topless) configurations as distinct patterns — not adjustments to a single base template. The soft-top template accounts for the erected canvas height of approximately 69 inches and the rear tub contour. The hard-top template follows the fiberglass hard top's C-pillar profile and rear window geometry at 70 to 71 inches. The open-frame template bridges the door-surround rails and roll cage at the correct height without pressing into the cockpit. We got this wrong in 2018 when we shipped a single template to a batch of CJ7 orders. Roughly a third of those buyers owned hard tops and another group owned topless configurations. Neither fit correctly.

2. Woven multi-layer breathability for original enamel. The CJ7 left AMC with alkyd enamel paint — a single-stage finish with no clearcoat buffer. Under a non-breathable cover, overnight temperature differentials cause moisture condensation that accumulates at the paint surface. Enamel blistering from trapped moisture requires panel-level correction or full repaint.
