Why this SUV needs the right cover
The "Grand Wagoneer" name applies to two vehicles that share nothing except a badge: the classic SJ-platform station wagon produced from 1963 through 1991 (approximately 194 to 195 inches, body-on-frame, woodgrain vinyl appliqués on post-1983 examples) and the modern WS-platform Grand Wagoneer introduced in 2022 (approximately 222 to 225 inches, modern unibody, no woodgrain). The gap between the two is 28 to 30 inches — not a size-tier variation but a different vehicle class.
A cover sized for the WS on an SJ leaves approximately 28 inches of excess fabric pooling at the rear corners. That pooled fabric creates a chronic abrasion zone against the SJ's rear quarter panels and woodgrain appliqué perimeter. For post-1983 SJ examples, that abrasion initiates the adhesive corner-lifting failure mode that leads to Di-Noc wood trim replacement.
DaShield Ultimum maps the SJ separately from the WS. Cost anchors: woodgrain appliqué replacement $2,000–$6,000; SJ paint and woodgrain full restoration $8,000–$20,000; Hagerty valuation loss for deteriorated woodgrain 25–40% vs. pristine. Designed in Buena Park, California. Ultimum is $209.99 with a Lifetime warranty.
Jeep Grand Wagoneer cover priorities
Engineered for the Jeep Grand Wagoneer
Three reasons DaShield Ultimum is the right cover for the classic SJ Grand Wagoneer.
1. Template sized for the actual SJ, not the WS. DaShield maps the SJ Grand Wagoneer (1984–1991) separately from the 2022-and-later WS at the pattern level — not as a size-tier adjustment. The SJ template accounts for the 194 to 195-inch body length, the high-roofline station wagon proportions, and the hem placement that seats below the door sill on all four doors. A cover that pools 28 inches of excess fabric at the rear is not a covered vehicle — it is a fabric tent over the rear quarter panels generating abrasion contact with every wind load.
2. Woven laminate inner face for woodgrain appliqué protection. The Di-Noc vinyl appliqués on post-1983 SJ examples sit approximately 1 to 2 millimeters proud of the surrounding door metal. A cover deployed or removed sideways across the door panels creates lateral drag across the appliqué edge. Non-woven polypropylene has a directional fiber surface that compounds that drag. DaShield Ultimum's woven laminate presents a uniform inner surface — combined with correct front-to-rear removal technique, it is the approach that keeps the appliqué adhesive bond intact at the perimeter corners.
3. Lifetime warranty against a $50,000–$80,000 asset. Fully restored SJ Grand Wagoneers now bring $50,000 to $80,000 in the collector market. Hagerty documents a 25 to 40 percent valuation difference between examples with pristine and deteriorated woodgrain. A $209.99 cover with a Lifetime warranty is the right ratio against woodgrain replacement at $2,000 to $6,000 and paint restoration at $8,000 to $20,000. Designed in Buena Park, California.
