The bodywork does not arrive at a horizontal lid; it simply curves and curves until it reaches a tip, like the stern of a rowboat. This shape, called the boat-tail or "coda tonda," gave the Duetto a silhouette that remains immediately recognizable.

In 1970, Alfa Romeo made a practical change for the Series 2: the boat-tail was replaced by the Kamm tail, a flat, cut-off rear with a standard horizontal trunk lid. The Kamm tail is cleaner to manufacture, provides better aerodynamic efficiency at speed, and is easier to fit luggage to. It was the right engineering decision. But it created a permanent geometric split in Spider production: one body from 1966 to 1969, and a different body from 1970 to 1993.

A cover hemmed for the Kamm-tail rear geometry — which accounts for the Series 2, 3, and 4 — will not seat against the Duetto's rounded stern. The hem that is designed to drop against a flat trunk lid has nothing to grip when the surface curves away to a point. The result is a cover that hangs loosely at the tail, leaves the tail tip exposed, and flaps in any wind. On a car where the tail tip is the most visually prized element — Duetto owners are acutely aware of the condition of that rounded stern — an exposed tail tip during storage is not an acceptable outcome.

Series 4 (1990–1993): The Final Refresh. The last iteration received a styling update that softened the exterior and further integrated the bumper treatment with the body. The Soft Top: The Spider's Most Expensive Vulnerability

Every Alfa Romeo Spider produced from 1966 to 1993 is a convertible with a canvas or vinyl soft top. On cars of this age, the soft top is now the single most financially significant component that a cover can protect.
