Why this vehicle needs the right cover
The Alfa Romeo Spider ran from 1966 to 1993 across four series that share a name and a chassis designation but differ in one critical dimension: the shape of the rear end. The Series 1 "Duetto" — produced from 1966 to 1969 — has a continuously curved, boat-shaped tail that tapers to a rounded point with no flat trunk surface whatsoever. Every series from 1970 onward adopted the Kamm tail: a clean, flat cut-off rear with a horizontal trunk lid. A cover patterned to the Kamm-tail geometry will not seat against the Duetto's rounded stern — it will leave the tail tip exposed and the hem unsupported.
Beyond rear geometry, every Spider produced between 1966 and 1993 is a 2-seat canvas-top convertible, and the soft top is now the most financially vulnerable component on the car. Original Alfa Romeo canvas tops are no longer available from the manufacturer; reproduction tops run $400 to $1,200 installed. UV and moisture are the primary enemies: UV causes canvas to become brittle and crack, while trapped condensation against the canvas weave during off-season storage promotes mold. The Spider's aged Italian lacquer — original Rosso Alfa red, Bianco white, and Verde green finishes are particularly prone to chalking and fade — carries its own protection case: concours-quality paint restoration runs $10,000 to $35,000, and paint correction on aged surfaces costs $600 to $2,000.
The DaShield Ultimum ($209.99, car size) is patterned to both the Series 1 boat-tail and the Series 2–4 Kamm-tail templates. Designed in Buena Park, California.
Alfa Romeo Spider cover priorities
Engineered for the Alfa Romeo Spider
Three reasons the DaShield Ultimum is the correct cover for the Alfa Romeo Spider.
1. Series-specific template for a 28-year, four-generation production run. The distinction that matters most for cover fit is not the year — it is the shape of the rear end. The Series 1 Duetto (1966–1969) has a boat-tail rear: a continuously curved surface that tapers to a rounded point, with no flat trunk lid. The Series 2 (1970–1982), Series 3 (1983–1989), and Series 4 (1990–1993) all use the Kamm tail — a flat, cut-off rear with a standard horizontal trunk lid. A cover hemmed for the Kamm tail will not close against the Duetto's rounded stern and will leave the tail tip exposed. Selecting Series 1 or Series 2/3/4 at checkout routes to the correct template for your car.
2. Non-abrasive woven face for aged Italian lacquer. The youngest Spider is now over 30 years old; the oldest is approaching 60. Alfa Romeo's original lacquer and early urethane finishes from this era — particularly Rosso Alfa, Bianco, and Verde — are prone to chalking and surface fragility as they age. Any fiber that drags perpendicularly across aged Italian lacquer during cover removal creates visible drag marks. The Ultimum's woven inner face is constructed to slide consistently rather than catching fiber ends against the paint surface. Paint correction on an aged Spider runs $600 to $2,000; concours restoration reaches $10,000 to $35,000.
3. Breathable woven construction for seasonal soft-top storage. The Spider's canvas convertible top is moisture-sensitive in a way that a hardtop vehicle's roof is not. Trapping condensation under a non-breathable cover against the canvas during off-season storage creates a mold environment and accelerates canvas fiber breakdown. A breathable woven construction allows moisture vapor to migrate outward through the cover rather than accumulating against the canvas surface. Reproduction Spider tops run $400 to $1,200 installed — a cost that breathable storage directly works to defer. Ultimum: $209.99, Lifetime warranty.
